10 Things I Hate About You Trailer Analysis:
One convention of a romantic comedy film that is shown in the film trailer for "10 things I hate about you" is the parents of the protagonist. The mum is shown as hard working and overprotective, while the dad of the character is shown as caring, but also clumsy and bumbling. Another convention of a romantic comedy that is shown is that it is set in a busy town/city. These are common locations for a film to be set, as they are places for people to see meet each other and to fall in love.
One effective camera shot/angle that is used is the high angle shot which shows the girl with her bumbling dad. In the scene, he has just thrown something in the direction of the ceiling, near to where the camera is hanging. This emphasises to the audience that he fits the representation of a dad in a romantic comedy, as it is a typical convention of this film genre. Another effective camera shot/angle that is used is the over the shoulder of the main girl, who is talking with one of the boys in the film. This is effective, as it shows that he is her main love interest in the film.
The editing between the scenes in the trailer are of a faster pace, to show people what will happen throughout the film. The main girl in the film is given prevalence in the trailer, to show to the audience that she is the main character in the film.

Soundtrack Research
Soundtrack Research:
The common soundtrack for a horror film is slow, tense music which builds up in pace and volume. This eventually climaxes to a loud, out of sync note which stuns and scares the audience alongside the scene. The music usually correlates to what is happening in the scene. For example, if a character was running down a corridor at a fast pace, then the music would increase in tempo as well.
In the scene in our film, when the camera zooms in on the doll, we will have a slow, eerie piece of non copyrighted music, perhaps played on a violin, to create a dark and creepy atmosphere. This type of music would make the audience feel uncomfortable when watching the scene.
Another scene in our film will have one of us jumping out from behind a door. For this scene, we will use a piece of music on a piano, which will be building up to the character jumping out. At this point, the piece of music would end on a suspended note on the piano, to make the audience jump when watching the scene.

180 Degree Rule
180 degree rule in filming:
The 180 degree rule is used in filming by directors to show two subjects communicating with each other which helps the audience feel like they're a part of the scene. An invisible line is used by the directors to help them film it so it doesn't look like the two subjects are talking to each other and instead are talking to the other characters in the scene.

Preliminary Task
Self assessment of "Why are you here?"
One strength of our short scene was how we used the black and white filter over the horror theme. This was effective as it helped create a tense and creepy atmosphere. The change in pace where me and Kevin turn around to the camera also creates fear for the audience as we use direct mode of address by looking into the eyes of the audience.
Another strength of our scene is that we have used a wide variety of camera angles when filming the different parts of the scene. For example, in the first part of the scene, we used an over the shoulder shot to show that me and Ryan are having a friendly conversation. We chose to use a long shot in the second part of the scene to show the all of the characters involved and to capture Baily and Ryan chasing after Me and Kevin. Finally, we used a two shot of Ryan and Callum and then with me and Kevin to show the horror scene. This is effectively used as it shows to the audience that we are separate groups of friends.
However, a weakness of our scene is having a variety of editing styles. For example we could alter the speed or filters to some of the other parts of the scene, to create a different effect. In the bullying part of the scene, we could slow down the part where Baily and Ryan push me and Kevin out of the way. This would be effective as we could see the key moment clearer, so it would stand out to the audience. Or for the opening part of the scene, we could make the lighting in the background darker by adding a different filter. This would help the audience see this part of the scene clearer.

Notting Hill Trailer analysis
Notting Hill Trailer Analysis:
One Convention of a romantic comedy is that it contains a character who is hopeless with love and the opposite who is a famous love icon. This is a common convention that it is used in a romantic comedy film. Another convention that is shown is that the protagonist's best friend is annoying and interfering with his friend's relationship.
The costume that is worn by Hugh Grant's character is plain, but scruffy, which contrasts against Julia Roberts' character, who is wearing a smarter, more formal costume. This shows the difference in class and status between the two characters. The use of the city of London as the setting is effective as it is a busy place, so it would be unlikely for the two characters to meet each other.
The character that is portrayed by Julia Roberts is shown as a famous A-list celebrity who is well known to the other characters. But the character that is portrayed by Hugh Grant is shown as a low class, unknown book store worker, who doesn't get much luck in love.
An effective camera shot that is used is the over the shoulder shot of the interview room. The room is busy, which shows that they are here to for Julia Robert's character, who is a famous actress. Another effective camera shot that is used is the two shot of Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant's characters. This shows that these are the two main characters of the film and that there may be a relationship between these two characters later on in the film.
The editing of the trailer is a at a regular pace throughout, although some scenes are cut quicker than others. The characters of Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts are given equal prevalence, to show to the audience that they are the main characters of the film.
The trailer hints to us that the story will be based around an eventual relationship between Hugh Grant and Julia Robert's character, although they have different levels of status and have never met each other before.

The Gallows Opening Scene Analysis
The Gallows Opening scene Analysis:
One convention of a horror film that is shown in the opening scene is that it set in a low lighting hall. This is used because darker rooms connote fear and terror. Another convention that is shown in the scene is that the main characters involved are young children, who usually are affected most and easiest by the form of evil.
The diegetic sounds of the audience screaming is effective as it gives off a theme of fear to the audience. The non diegetic sound of the camera fuzzing is used to show that it was filmed in the past, which is why it says on the camera that the film is set in 1993.
The costumes for the characters shows that they are filming a school play in front of an audience. The setting of a stage in a school hall also shows this to the audience.
We see a group of schoolchildren up on the stage, this shows to the audience that they are first affected by the form of evil, which is a typical convention of a horror film.
The opening scene is all filmed with one flowing scene, although a faded black out occurs at the end of the scene.

Spider-man opening Scene Analysis G321
Spider Man Opening Scene Analysis:
One convention of an action film that is shown in the opening scene of spider man is that there is a protagonist in the film. It shows to the audience that he will be the hero of the film. Another convention of an action film that is used is having the film set in a busy city. Cities are commonly used as the main setting of an action film.
The diegetic sound of the traffic in the city is used to show to the audience that we are in a busy, urban location. The non diegetic music that plays when Peter is trying to catch up with the bus is used to make us feel bad for him as he is being bullied.
The costumes for the characters are fairly plain and naturalistic, to show that we are in an average city. The use of glasses as a prop for Peter show to the audience that he might be more likely to get bullied because he is wearing them.
Peter is shown as an innocent teenager who gets bullied by lots of people in his class. However he has a love interest in Mary Jane, who also is the love interest of some of Peter's bullies.
Peter gets prevalence throughout the majority of the opening scene to show that he is the protagonist of the film. There is little editing in the opening apart from the cuts to the next part of the scene.

Skyfall Opening Scene Analysis G321
Skyfall opening scene analysis:
One convention of an action film that I used in the opening scene of the film is that there is a veichle chase with motorbikes. Fast paced chases are commonly seen in action films. Another convention that is shown in the opening scene of Skyfall is the setting of the film. Many action films are set in busy towns or cities.
The non diegetic sound of the background music is effective as it builds tension and suspense for the audience when they watch the chase scene, because the volume gets louder and the tempo gets quicker. The diegetic motorbikes sounds show to the audience that the characters are in a Fast paced chase.
James Bond is portrayed as smart and intelligent, to show that he is an MI5 agent. The villain is shown as more scruffy, and he is also foreign which, regularly occurs with action films.
The use of costume is effective, as James Bond is shown in a smarter suit, which shows that he is the main character, while the villain is dressed in a more scruffy way, which shows that he has a lower status, as he has stolen something.
James Bond is given prevalence in the opening scene, to show to the audience that he's the main character. Cross cutting is also used to switch between the characters involved in the motorbike chase.

Jeepers Creepers Opening Scene Analysis G321
Jeepers Creepers Opening Scene Analysis:
One convention of a horror film that is shown is that the teenagers are shown as irresponsible and unintelligent. This is because they get themselves into trouble with the person driving the truck. Another convention that is shown is that the scene is set in a rural country lane. This is used as it shows to the audience that no one can help the teenagers when they're in trouble.
One effective camera shot that is used is the two shot of the two teenagers when they are driving along alone, This sets the scene and shows to the audience that they are close together. Another effective camera angle that is used is the long shot that showed the driver of the truck standing in the creepy setting. This introduces the antagonist of the film to the audience.
Mise en scene is shown by making the villain's costume as dirty and dark, to symbolize evil. It contrasts with the teenagers brighter and more plain clothing.
The characters of the teenagers start out as childish and noisy, but after they see the antagonist, they turn quieter and more sensible.
There is little editing used throughout the opening scene, although there is some cross cutting between the teenagers car and the villains truck.

The Woman in Black Opening Scene Analysis G321
The Woman in Black Opening Scene Analysis:
One convention of a horror film that is shown in the opening two minutes of the film "The Woman in Black" is that it is set in an old house which looks haunted. Another Convention that we see in the opening scene in the film is that the three young girls have been possessed, which is that young children are usually affected first by the form of evil.
One effective camera shot that is used in the opening scene is the high angle shot, where the camera looks down on them. This could be used to represent the form of evil which takes over and possesses the girls. Another effective camera shot that is used is the medium shot of the 3 girls walking towards the window after they've been possessed.
The costumes that are used for the three girls are Victorian style dresses, which shows to the audience that it is set a long time ago. The props of dolls and small toys show to the audience that they are younger girls and that they are a group of friends.
The non diegetic music is effective as it brings fear to the audience, as it lets them know that something bad is going to happen. Also the loud suspended notes that play on the keyboard are effective as they build tension by climaxing to the part where the three girls jump out of the window.
The characters of the young girls shows them as creepy, but also as a good group of friends. After they become obsessed, they copy each others movements and actions, which ends with them jumping out of the upstairs window together.
The scene is edited at a slow pace through the majority of the opening scene, as it helps set the scene, and the tone of the film. The scene is also edited with a fade out of the opening scene, to show to the audience that there will be a new scene and setting.

Conventions Of A Horror Film G321
Conventions of a horror film:
One convention of a horror film is creepy settings or locations. These include old houses, woods and lakes. These settings are usually in rural places, to show to the audience that these places are more abandoned and deserted. Jump Scares are also a common convention that is found in most horror films. This is where something or someone jumps out of nowhere to scare the audience and the characters in the film. Another convention of a horror film is scary creepy music, where suspended notes play continuously.
In most horror films, there is a form of evil, such as zombies or poltergeists. These characters are the main antagonists of the film. If teenagers are in the film, they are represented as spoilt and irresponsible, which makes the audience members have a hatred of them. However younger kids are either represented as evil or lonely, where they have an imaginary friend to play with.

Horror Target Audience Profile
Horror Target Audience Profile:
The target audience for a horror film is young adults aged 15-29. A reason for this could be that most protagonists in horror films are usually of this age. Young couples are also used sometimes as the protagonists of the film. An example where this is used in a horror film is "Jeepers Creepers!" as the two main characters are a teenage boy and girl. Young adults also enjoy watching horror films in their friendship groups as you can enjoy sharing your views on the film with each other.

Genre Indicators
Insidious
Paranormal Activity The Woman in Black Saw |
Harry Potter Opening Scene Analysis
One of the genre indicators that we can see in the opening scene to "Harry Potter and the philosophers stone" is the character of Mrs. Mcgonnogall transform from a cat to a human. This shows to the audience that it is a fantasy film. Also, the characters are mainly of wizards and witches, which also show the fantasy genre.
One question that the audience could be asking is how the other characters would have an impact on Harry's future, such as if they were to look after him. Also, they could be wondering how Harry Potter got the scar on his forehead, as well as to why he has no parents.
We find out early on in the film that Harry Potter has no parents, although we are unsure as to why his parents are no longer with them. We also find out that the film is related to magic, as we see one of the characters turn from a cat into a human.
The non diegetic background music relates to the genre of fantasy, as it has a magical theme to it. The diegetic sound of Hagrid's flying motorbike car hints to us as well that the genre of the film is fantasy.
One effective camera angle that is used is the low angle shot of hagrid landing on his motorbike car which he had been flying. This once again emphasises the genre of the film being fantasy. An effective camera shot that is used in the opening scene is the extreme close up of Harry's scar on his forehead. This shows the audience that this mark could be important to the film itself.

Dark Knight Opening Scene Analysis
Dark Knight Opening Scene Analysis
A genre indicator which tells the audience that it's an action film is that there gun fights and bank heists. These are examples of themes that can be found in an action film. These can create excitement and tension for the audience. Another genre indicator that we can see s that there are heroes and villains, which are in every action film.
The Question that the audience would be asking from watching the opening scene is what tensions will occur between the Joker and Batman. They will also be questioning the origins of the Joker and his clan.
However, we have already found out that the Joker is the main villain of the film and that he has a small gang to help him. We also find out that the film is set mainly in a busy, fictional city, as we see many buildings and lots of traffic.
The music that is played in the opening scene builds tension as the beat gets faster and louder. It is also played on the drums, which contemplates the action theme.
One Camera shot that stands out to the audience is the aerial shot of the Joker and his crew on the rooftop raid. This shot is effective as it builds tension for when the characters are running. Another Camera shot that is used effectively is the multiple shot of the Joker's henchmen. This shows that they work together and that they are very similar in status.

Mad Max: Fury Road - Opening Scene
Mad Max Opening Scene Analysis
One genre indicator that shows that this is a Science Fiction film is that the characters can alter into different people. This is shown when Max is running down the hallway in the desert building and he bumps into a young girl and a old man. When he sees them, the little girl's faces changes into a skull and the man's eyes turn red, which makes him look like a demon. Also, at the beginning of the scene, we see a two headed lizard sitting on a rock. This indicates Science Fiction, as it is a fictional animal.
One question that the audience would be asking is who the people are that are chasing Max and what they are doing. However we would assume that they are evil and that they are the villains as it looked as if they were torturing him and chasing him when he ran off. Also, the audience would be willing to know where the characters are, as we only see a barren desert wasteland.
We find out in the opening scene that Mad Max gets captured and tortured, which suggests to us that he has enemies and that they are the villains of the film. We also find that a young girl aged around 10 years old may have an important role in the film, as we see her pop up in front of Max several times throughout the opening scene.
The opening scene includes mainly dialogue and diegetic sounds, such as the engine of the cars and motorbikes. However when Mad Max is being tortured, we can here non diegetic music in the background. It sounds like a tribal beat, which relates to the characters that are torturing Max.
One effective camera shot that is used is the birds eye view shot of the desert surface below Max. This shows to the audience the view from Max when he is looking down from the top of the mountain. An effective camera angle that is used during the opening scene is the high angle shot of Max's back which has been tattooed. This is effective as we see that he is being tortured.

Opening Two Minutes Analysis By Sean
The Opening two minutes of the film "Green Street Hooligans" adheres to the conventions for a hybrid genre of an action film and sports film.
A feature of this film that adheres to the action genre of the film is the setting of the film. The opening of the film is based at a tube station on the London Underground. This is a public place, where many fight scenes take place in similar films. Also, one part of the opening scene shows the football fans fighting in front of innocent members of the public, which startles and scares them. The use of swearing and insulting by the football fans also shows verbal violence as well as anger.
A feature of the film that adheres to the sports genre of the film is the topic of talk by the fans. I can identify that they are football fans because they talk about football clubs, such as Tottenham and West Ham. However they talk about football by relating it to the stereotypical football fans that are hooligans.
Another feature of the film that adheres to the action genre of the film is the age and gender of the characters who are fighting each other. They are men between the age of 20 and 30 which is the common age and gender for violent characters to be represented.
A film that has a similar opening is "Football Factory." This is because it shares the same hybrid genre of sport and action. It is also very similar as the film is based around football talk and hooliganism in football, just like Green Street Hooligans is.

28 Weeks Later Opening Scene Analysis Sean Duffy G321
28 Weeks Later Analysis: Sean Duffy G321
The introduction to the film "28 Weeks Later" has many key moments that are broadcast well by having a wide range of camera angles, which give different effects to the audience.
The first key moment of the opening to the film is when the little boy knocks on the door of where Don and Alice are staying and asks to them if he can come in and stay with them to not get taken and eaten by the zombies. However, when he is invited in by Alice, the zombies break in and attack everyone inside. The filming of the scene is made effective by making the camera pan from a two shot of Alice and Don to a medium shot of the door, which throughout the scene zooms in to make an extreme close up of the handle of the door. This has an effect on the audience as it puts themselves in the feet and of Don and Alice by making them think on what decision they would've made if it was them.
One key moment that was in the opening of the film 28 Weeks Later was the moment when Don's wife died after being attacked by zombies. A low angle long shot is used to show the moment when this happens. This has an effect on me as I feel angered that Don walked away from his wife. However, it also makes me feel bad for Don, as he was forced into making a difficult decision.
Another key moment in the film is when Don is running away from many zombies across the large countryside field. This moment is shown by a long shot looking over the shoulder behind Don. It's also made effective by making the zombies into a blurred view as the cameraman is running behind them. This has an effect on the audience as it makes us feel like we are a part of the scene and that we are watching Don being chased by the zombies. The shot is also filmed at a canted angle to give it a tilted effect.
Also, the moment when Don slams the door on his wife, Alice is a key moment as it meant that he
never saw his wife alive again. This was broadcasted by having the scene shot in slow motion and ends with a close up of Alice's face. This has an effect on the audience as it makes us feel bad for
Alice as Don has just betrayed her by leaving her. This also makes us feel angered towards Don as he should have been more loyal to Alice. The scene is also effective as the scene is shot in slow motion to make the audience know that it is a key moment of the opening of the film as it builds tension.
In conclusion I have found that scenes in films can be made effective by a variety of camera angles as well of the use of techniques such as slow motion and tilted angles. These can make the audience have different emotions when watching these films.

My influences and interests
My Influences and Interests:
My favourite film is Green Street Hooligans because I enjoy watching football, so I can understand and relate to some of the themes in the film. I also enjoy the film because of the mixed emotions that occur. The film contains comedy, action and an upsetting scene at the end where one of the main characters is killed. The actors portrayed the characters well, as some people could find them relatable. My favourite moment of the film is when the American student is attacked by a set of rival fans and his new friends from England have to fight them off to protect him.
My favourite director is Steven Spielberg, because he has directed many successful films which have entertained me when I watch them. For example films such as Jurassic park, ET and Jaws are commercial successes and films that I found as breathtaking to watch.
My favourite genre of film is horror because I enjoy the tension that is built throughout the films, as they keep you entertained. One of my favourite horror films is The Woman in Black, due to the use of sound keeping you focused on the film. For example loud music in the jump scare scenes entertained me as it shocked me. I also think that horror films are good to watch with your friends as you can interact with each other more when you talk about the films
I am anticipating to watch many of the upcoming horror and action films that are soon going to be released as these films belong to my favourite genres. However I am also anticipating the release of the film that is to be based around English footballer Jamie Vardy. This is because I enjoy watching films and TV programmes that are related to football, as I enjoy watching football, so this means I understand more of the themes in the films.
The last film that I watched was Paranormal activity 5. It is a horror film which is based around paranormal activity occurring in a normal neighborhood house in an American town. The film entertained me as the horror elements of the film scared me and kept me entreagued as to what would happen next in the film.
